Joaquim Pinto

Joaquim Pinto

Portuguese filmmaker, born in Porto in 1957. He completed his degree at Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema in 1980. He has a post-graduate degree in Film Production – EAVE, Media program. He worked as a sound engineer in over 100 films by a wide range of directors, including Manoel de Oliveira, Alain Tanner, João Botelho, António Reis and Margarida Cordeiro, André Téchiné, Werner Schroeter, João César Monteiro and Paulo Rocha. He has also produced more than 30 films, such as Recordações da Casa Amarela or A Comédia de Deus de João César Monteiro, both of which won awards at Venice. In 1988, he directed his first feature-length film, Uma Pedra No Bolso, followed by Onde Bate o Sol. Both films were selected for the Berlin International Film Festival. With Nuno Leonel, he directed and produced several documentary films such as Surfavela, Cidade Velha and Rabo de Peixe. Both Joaquim Pinto and Nuno Leonel head PRESENTE, a publishing and production company dedicated to independent projects in music, literature and cinema. In 2013, his documentary E Agora? Lembra-me not only won three awards at Locarno (among which a Silver Lion), it travelled more than 40 countries, winning distinctions in a festival circuit normally dedicated to fiction film.
