Portuguese filmmaker, born in Figueira da Foz. Maria, his first feature-length film, marked his debut as director in 1979. Since then, he has directed 15 more films, between feature and medium-length fiction and documentary films. He was nominated several times for the world’s most prestigious film festivals, having integrated the Official Selection of the Venice Film Festival, with A Estrangeira and Longe da Vista, the Berlin and Toronto festivals, with O Processo do Rei, Cannes, with O Fim do Mundo, and Locarno, with Os Olhos da Ásia. He directed countless documentaries on the fields of the arts, literature and architecture. He is a researcher and full professor at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa’s Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas and the author of several books, including A Ordem no Cinema (1994), O Livro das Imagens (2007), O Homem Imaginado (2006), As Lições do Cinema (2006) and O Cinema da Não-Ilusão (2006). He has published many articles on cinema and contemporary art in Portuguese and foreign publications (namely in Trafic magazine).
