Between 1962 and 1963, he attended the Cinema Course from the Estúdio Universitário de Cinema Experimental at the Centro Universitário de Lisboa. He participated in the shooting of Paulo Rocha’s Verdes Anos, Fernando Lopes’ Belarmino, and Artur Ramos’ Os Pássaros de Asas Cortadas. In 1968, he took part in the Encontros de Cinema Português, organized by the Cineclube do Porto, which marked the Gulbenkian Foundation’s interest in the Cinema Novo (New Cinema). He co-signed the document “O Ofício do Cinema Em Portugal”, addressed to the Gulbenkian Foundation by filmmakers of the Cinema Novo, a document which refounded the Cinema Português and led to the establishment of the CPC, Centro Português de Cinema, CRL, of which he was a founding associate, 1968-1976. He was assistant-director for several films and was awarded a scholarship by the Gulbenkian Foundation to attend the London School Of Film Technique. He directed more than 50 episodes for the series “Ensaio” and “Impacto”, shown on RTP between 1971 and 1973. He was executive producer for feature-length films by Alfredo Tropa, Fernando Matos Silva and Manoel de Oliveira. He co-directed the documentary Caminhos da Liberdade, the result of collective work by the Cinequipa, which included that footage and the footage that was captured up until the historical 1st May, especially that captured in Barreiro and at the PIDE/DGS headquarters in Lisbon. He worked as a writer for several feature-length films. He directed the feature-length film Antes a Sorte Que Tal Morte as well as countless documentary films for television.
